"Flake" - Jack Johnson

Ben Harper & Jack Johnson
In the late 90's - early 2000's, there was a plethora of acoustic, mellow artists that emerged like Ben Harper, John Mayer and Jack Johnson.  To be honest they all sounded like the same person  to me, who in my head I thought of as"John Jack Harper".  I've downloaded a few songs lately by Ben Harper and Jack Johnson, and I can now admit that I can see what all the fuss was about. "Flake" by Jack Johnson has been on repeat on my Ipod for the last few weeks, and I've been meaning to dedicate a blog post to it.  This is not my typical kind of post, because I don't have a personal connection to the song, and there's not an interesting story behind it.  But this song fucking rocks.. I mean that  (yes it warranted an f-bomb), so even if you don't listen to my ramblings go listen to this song!!

No Flakes Up In Here

For those of you you don't know what a "flake" is, it refers to someone who is unreliable (not dandruff - so put down the Head & Shoulders.)  I wholeheartedly admit that while "flaking" is one of my pet peeves, I am guilty of it myself.  I am a fan of doing what I want - and sometimes what I want changes by the minute.

I don't know a whole lot about Jack Johnson but I do know that:
1) He is ridiculously good looking
2) He is a surfer from Hawaii
3) The same guy that produced Ben Harper - J.P. Plunier, helped Johnson make it big

Brushfire Fairytales
"Flake" was first released off of the album "Brushfire Fairytales", and received huge success in New Zealand and a bit of success on the U.S. charts. Johnson's use of word repetition is brilliant and sounds completely natural.  "Maybe she thinks I know something, Maybe maybe she thinks I'm fine, Maybe she knows something I don't", or "I'm so tired, I'm so tired, I'm so tired of trying."   The song has a completely mellow, soft vibe, and features only an acoustic guitar as background music.  Another line I love love from this song is, "It seems to me that maybe, it pretty much always means no." That line speaks so much truth. I will often throw a "maybe" out there just to get someone off my case, even if I know it's already a no.  Maybe it's because "maybe" is much more acceptable as an answer.

I know she said it's alright
But you can make it up next time
I know she knows it's not right
There ain't no use in lying
Maybe she thinks I know something
Maybe maybe she thinks its fine
Maybe she knows something I don't
I'm so, I'm so tired, I'm so tired of trying

It seems to me that maybe

It pretty much always means no
So don't tell me you might just let it go
And often times we're lazy
It seems to stand in my way
Cause no one NO not no one
Likes to be let down

I know she loves the sunrise

No longer sees it with her sleeping eyes
And I know that when she said she's gonna try
Well it might not work because of other ties and
I know she usually has some other ties
And I wouldn't want to break 'em, nah, I wouldn't want to break 'em
Maybe she'll help me to untie this but
Until then well, I'm gonna have to lie to you.

It seems to me that maybe

It pretty much always means no
So don't tell me you might just let it go
And often times we're lazy
It seems to stand in my way
Cause no one no not no one
Likes to be let down
It seems to me that maybe
It pretty much always means no
So don't tell me you might just let it go

The harder that you try baby, the further you'll fall

Even with all the money in the whole wide world
Please please please don't pass me
Please please please don't pass me
Please please please don't pass me by

Everything you know about me now baby you gonna have to change

You gonna have to call it by a brand new name
Please please please don't drag me
Please please please don't drag me
Please please please don't drag me down

Just like a tree down by the water baby I shall not move

Even after all the silly things you do
Please please please don't drag me
Please please please don't drag me
Please please please don't drag me down

"I Can't" - Ben Sollee

This makes me scared
"I may rock, but I'm not made of stone." There are things I'm afraid of. I'm scared of needles, balloons, forests at night, and getting pregnant. I am so happy that I have made it to my mid-twenties without any sort of pregnancy mishaps. I feel like now if I happened to get "knocked up" it wouldn't be nearly the disaster it would have been when I was a teenager. As previously mentioned in other blogs - I am a small town girl from a ridiculously small town. No stoplights-bears in the backyard-small.

I'd say a solid 10% of girls my age and a bit younger that live back home have at least one child. Not all of the situations are a "baby-daddy" type situation, but most are. I know girls younger than my little brother (who is 20) that are on kid number 2 or 3!

Don't drink the water
My Hometown's favorite saying when a new batch of girls would find themselves in the family way was "must be something in the water." Needless to say I stayed as far as I could away from said "water" and hit the road to good old Manitoba. Now I do want to have kids (I think ughh?) ....eventually, but right now I am so blissfully selfish and irresponsible that I cannot even fathom having a baby. Over the past few years I've often had a recurring pregnancy dream. I am big and pregnant in the dream but never see the baby. Most recently I had a dream where I adopted a baby from a pet store and went out to party - locking it up in a kennel (like I do with my puppy) for the night. New dream = confirmation that I would be a horrid mother if put in that situation at this point in my life.

That baby wants out
As previously stated I am a fan of trashy reality TV shows. My new fav right now is "16 & Pregnant" and its' spin off show, "Teen Mom". The show follows a variety of 16ish year old girls who are prego. These girls are in school, living at their parents, with boyfriends - not with boyfriends. All of the stories are train-wrecks and nightmarish situations for some of these seemingly smart - otherwise normal girls. During one particular episode of "Teen Mom" where they are showcasing the struggles of the young mamas they played "I Can't" by Ben Sollee.

Sollee - a political activist musician, from Kentucky, starts the song out with,"This ain't the life I thought we'd live." The song made me feel a tremendous amount of empathy for the moms, because I'm sure they thought things would be much different. From the time girls are young we are taught to "play with dolls" and "play house", and "mother" our various stuffed animals. Most girls grow up with the dream of having a house with a white picket fence,a husband and a family. I'm sure none of the girls on the show grew up with hopes of being a teenage, single mom living in her boyfriend's parents basement.  This song serves as a reminder that everything doesn't always turn out the way we plan."This ain't the home I hoped we'd make, This ain't the path I thought I chose."

Barbie and G.I. Joe
"I Can't" also gives a perspective of what those 16 year old "babies daddies" are feeling as well - "This ain't the song I thought I'd write, These ain't the words I want to say, I can't be your man." While little girls are taught to nurture, little boys are taught to rough-house, and engage in various war/fighting type activities. While they lack the natural maternal instinct that most girls are born with - boys are brought up with a instinct to "protect". These poor teenage boys who are barely old enough to shave, are now given the responsibility of protecting and providing not only for their girlfriends, but for a child as well. It's no wonder almost all of the show's teenage couple's have split up.How very archaic that in all of the years of evolution we are instilled with the same gender specific values as the cavemen were, to "nurture" and "protect."

This ain't the life I thought I'd live

This ain't the home I hoped we'd make
This ain't the path I thought I chose
This ain't the sky I'd hoped we'd see
This ain't the tree I thought would grow

This ain't the god to which I pray
This ain't the song I thought I'd write
These ain't the words I want to say
I can't be your man

This ain't the flag I thought we'd raise
This ain't the wind I'd hoped would blow
This ain't the ship I thought would sail
This ain't the rose I'd hoped would bloom

This ain't the play I thought we'd stage
These ain't the hills I'd hoped we'd roam
This ain't the sword pulled from the lake
Yours ain't the heart I want to break
But I can't be your man

This ain't the end I thought it'd be
Are you someone I've loved before
In this the song the caged bird sings
Is there some law I choose to ignore
This is a faith I must defend

I've tried, I can't pretend
There is a hope I must contend
We'll find the thread with the strength to mend
I can't be your man

Least not this time around
And it's something unpredictable
Like where a leaf might fall
And it's something unrestrainable
Like a rooster's morning call
I can't be your man

"Wagon Wheel - The Old Crow Medicine Show

Qigong = no pain
"Pain is just a state of mind. Qigong is a Chinese term that describes different Chinese systems of physical and mental training for health, martial arts and self enlightenment. Shaolin Monks practice qigong, which allows them to block out pain completely. I think that pain is both physical and mental. Strength is not defined by eliminating pain, but by having the capacity to overcome it. I'm skeptical if one could actually "think" themselves out of pain, but I do believe there are mental techniques to reduce or manage it.

Ouch
A few weeks ago I was getting another tattoo done (definitely not my first) which took about 3 hours. At the beginning of the appointment I was tense, focusing on the pain, and could barely stop myself from crying. Please note my tattoo artist thought that was hilarious. I put my IPod on, and reminded myself to breathe and relax. I focused on the songs and my breathing, and almost instantly I felt some of the pain subside. When my IPod shuffled to "Wagon Wheel" by "The Old Crow Medicine Show", I recited all of the lyrics in my head and relaxed to the sound of the fiddle. I told my tattoo artist that I would keep "Wagon Wheel" on repeat until he finished my tattoo as incentive for him to hurry up (his taste in music being more of the metallic kind). I walked out of the tattoo shop with a sore arm, new ink, and a new-found love for "Wagon Wheel."

I have to give credit to my little brother again for turning me onto this song. He introduced it to me as, "this is the next song you will blog about." He was clearly right, (ughh) don't tell him. When I discovered that there was a nice Bob Dylan tie-in to this song I couldn't resist raving about it to all of you "High Fidelity" readers out there.

My Hero
Bob Dylan originally recorded "Rock Me Mama" (The song's original title) for the "Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid" movie soundtrack. Dylan left the song unfinished (The chorus from "Wagon Wheel" is his) and "Rock Me Mama" was later released on one of his Bootleg CD's. Ketch Secor, lead vocalist for The Old Crow Medicine Show, picked up what Dylan had started and finished the song's lyrics in what he describes as a partially autobiographical reference to his own life. The song tells the story of a man who travels from New England, through Philadelphia, down the eastern coast of the United States, ending up in Raleigh, North Carolina where he hopes to see his lover. Secor sings "If I die in Raleigh, at least I will die free." Bob Dylan approved of the song and is listed as a co-writer along with Secor. O.C.M.S performed it for the legend himself on Dylan's 60th Birthday.

"Wagon Wheel" has become the anthem for O.C.M.S, but Secor says that the song originates prior to the bands formation.

"I heard a Dylan song that was unfinished back in high school and I finished it . . As a serious Bob Dylan fan, I was listening to anything he had put on tape, and this was an outtake of something he had mumbled out on one of those tapes. I sang it all around the country from about 17 to 26, before I ever even thought, 'oh I better look into this.'"

Old Crow Medicine Show
Old Crow Medicine Show was discovered while they were busking outside of a pharmacy in North Carolina by the daughter of country/folk legend Doc Watson. Doc Watson invited the band to take part in his annual MerleFest.  That break led to a mentorship between the band and Marty Stuart, President of the Grand Ole Opry, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. From that point on the band began releasing albums, touring and rocking all around the country like a "Wagon Wheel."

Headed down south to the land of the pines

And I'm thumbin' my way into North Caroline
Starin' up the road
Pray to God I see headlights

I made it down the coast in seventeen hours
Pickin' me a bouquet of dogwood flowers
And I'm a-hopin' for Raleigh
I can see my baby tonight

So rock me, mama, like a wagon wheel
Rock me, mama, any way you feel
Hey, mama rock me

Rock me, mama, like the wind and the rain
Rock me, mama, like a south-bound train
Hey, mama rock me

Runnin' from the cold up in New England
I was born to be a fiddler in an old-time string band
My baby plays the guitar
I pick a banjo now

Oh, the North country winters keep a-gettin' me now
Lost my money playin' poker so I had to up and leave
But I ain't a-turnin' back
To livin' that old life no more

So rock me, mama, like a wagon wheel
Rock me, mama, any way you feel
Hey, mama rock me

Rock me, mama, like the wind and the rain
Rock me, mama, like a south-bound train
Hey, mama rock me

Walkin' to the south out of Roanoke
I caught a trucker out of Philly
Had a nice long toke

But he's a-headed west from the Cumberland Gap
To Johnson City, Tennessee
And I got to get a move on before the sun

I hear my baby callin' my name
And I know that she's the only one
And if I die in Raleigh
At least I will die free

So rock me, mama, like a wagon wheel
Rock me, mama, any way you feel
Hey, mama rock me

Rock me, mama, like the wind and the rain
Rock me, mama, like a south-bound train
Hey, mama rock me

"The Weary Kind" - Ryan Bingham

Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart
I'm not a huge fan of movies, I don't have a video store membership and I've been to the movie theater maybe 3 times over the past year. Once in awhile a movie does come out that catches my attention, and so I finally got around to watching "Crazy Heart". Despite success at the award shows this movie seems to have flown under most people's radar.

My favorite types of movies are the ones that give a very real picture of human existence. Movies that are raw, ugly and believable. Jeff Bridges has done for "Crazy Heart", what Mickey Rourke did for "The Wrestler". These once infamous, aging celebrities portray characters that seem to mimic their own careers. They play talented, faded stars who are working towards a comeback.
"You make me want to be a better man"
?Bridges embodies the character of  hard-living, broken down, country music star, "Bad Blake". Blake finds his salvation after meeting a music journalist, Jean Craddock (played by Maggie Gyllenhaal). Bridges gives a hauntingly authentic performance as an alcoholic, rough around the edges, musician. After falling in love with Jean, Blake decides to get sober and re-launch his career. I'm more of a realistic romantic, my favorite movie line of all time is from Jack Nicholson's character, in "As Good As It Gets", "You make me want to be a better man". This quote reminded me of Bridge's character. He's not an overly romantic, good looking or charming man, but he is willing to be a better person for the woman he loves. That to me - speaks volumes over any diamonds, poetry or flowers. (SPOILER) The movie ends with Blake sobering up and regaining some of his old glory. His career and bank account are revitalized after penning a song for uber popular Country stud - Tommy Sweet (played by Colin Farrelll). The song he writes is "The Weary Kind". As was Springsteen's anthem "The Wrestler", the theme song for "Crazy Heart" is a perfect match.

Ryan Bingham
Bridges performs the guitar and vocals for the song but it was written for the movie by Ryan Bingham. At only 29 years old Bingham took home an Academy AwardGolden Globe and an AMA for his song "The Weary Kind". Don't let Bingham's boyish good looks fool you - his voice has the weight and depth of a man much wiser. The first time I listened to Bingham sing I was immediately reminded of Tom Waits. My favorite description of Tom Waits voice was by critic Daniel Durchholz, who said Waits voice sounded, "like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car." Through my research (ahem.. googling) I found another comparison between Bingham and Waits by Texas Music Magazine, who wrote that ,"Bingham talks and sings with a whiskey-and-cigarette throat that screams hard living. Hard in a way that can make a 29-year-old sound like a 50-year-old Tom Waits."The movie "Crazy Heart" and the song, "The Weary Kind" really do go hand in hand. You have to listen/watch one to fully appreciate the other.

Your hearts on the loose

You rolled them sevens with nothing to lose
And this aint no place for the weary kind

You called all your shots
Shooting 8 ball at the corner truck stop
Somehow this dont feel like home anymore

And this aint no place for the weary kind
And this aint no place to lose your mind
And this aint no place to fall behind
Pick up your crazy heart and give it one more try

Your body aches
Playing your guitar and sweating out the hate
The days and the nights all feel the same

Whiskey has been a thorn in your side
and it doesnt forget
the highway that calls for your heart inside

And this aint no place for the weary kind
And this aint no place to lose your mind
And this aint no place to fall behind
Pick up your crazy heart and give it one more try

Your lover's warm kiss
Its too damn far from your fingertips
You are the man that ruined her world
Your hearts on the loose
You rolled them sevens with nothing to lose
And this aint no place for the weary kind
