"9 Crimes" - Damien Rice

Kermit The Frog Here
When I was ten my most prized possession was my Kermit the Frog Keyboard. It was blue, and only about 2ft long. The keys were itty bitty as to accommodate tiny little fingers. I fell in love with my keyboard and was promptly enrolled in weekly piano lessons. Kermit the Frog was replaced with a proper keyboard, and instead of "Row Your Boat", I began playing Beethoven's Symphonies. Eventually I became a deadbeat and "dropped out" out of the Royal Conservatory. Beethoven's Symphonies gave way to ballads from Aerosmith and Sarah McLachlan. I decided to play piano only for my own pleasure, not certification purposes.
?
My hands looks like this
?
You can tell I'm a pianist by looking at my hands. In the telltale-way that you can identify a guitar player's hands through their calluses and short nails (Unfortunately for my hands I play guitar also), you can tell a piano players hands by their long, skinny fingers. I'd like to say they are graceful, but to be honest they look like "skeletor" as some of my friends (term used loosely..) have so kindly commented. I'm a fairly small chick and my hands are pretty out of proportion with my size. Sacrificing my hands is a small price to pay for being able to produce music. Being able to sit down with an instrument and play a song is a feeling like none other. I haven't played piano as much as I'd like to lately because I've wrecked my old keyboard. I do know though, (from peeking in the Christmas Room at my parents house) that I am getting a new one for Christmas. I will be renewing my love affair with the piano once again. I chose this song to blog about because i've decided that it's the first song I'm going to learn on my new keyboard.

Damien Rice
I'm unsure where I found this song. I think I was randomly downloading soundtracks for "True Blood", and I happened to grab it. Although he has had success on the UK and Irish Charts I don't think Damien Rice has managed to go mainstream in North America yet. I've never heard any of his songs on the radio which is surprising because "9 Crimes" has been featured on many popular shows such as "Grey's Anatomy", "True Blood", "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation", "Jericho" and the third "Shrek" movie.

Despite the beautiful piano melody and the addition of Lisa Hannigan's sweet vocals, the song comes off as very dark. Reading through comments about the song there is one word continuously used to describe this song; haunting. I can't figure out exactly what "9 Crimes" is about, but it appears to be about cheating. The song describes cheating as a crime. The person cheating has the morals of a criminal because they know what they are doing is wrong and choose to do it anyways, "It's a small crime, and I've got no excuse." It seems to be a situation where the relationship is on the rocks and one person begins an affair. The "Gun" that is "Loaded" refers to the potential that person has to cause harm.

The cheater is questioning how they are supposed to hold on to the relationship if their partner doesn't want to do their part, "If you don't shoot it how am I supposed to hold it". You hear the struggle the cheater is having because he obviously still cares alot about his partner but he wants to be with his affair, "It's the wrong kind of place to be thinking of you," , "It's the wrong time she's pulling me through." It always seems easier to move on to something new and shiny rather than fix something that's broken. What people forget is that if you care about something and succeed in fixing it, it will always be more valuable to you than anything new you could replace it with.

Leave me out with the waste, this is not what I do

It's the wrong kind of place to be thinking of you
It's the wrong time for somebody new
It's a small crime and I got no excuse
And is that all right, yeah?

I give my gun away when it's loaded
Is that all right, yeah?
If you don't shoot it how am I supposed to hold it?
Is that all right, yeah?

I give my gun away when it's loaded
Is that all right, yeah, with you?
Leave me out with the waste, this is not what I do

It's the wrong kind of place to be cheating on you
It's the wrong time she's pulling me through
It's a small crime and I got no excuse
And is that all right, yeah?

If I give my gun away when it's loaded
Is that all right, yeah?
If you don't shoot it, how am I supposed to hold it?
Is that all right, yeah?

I give my gun away when it's loaded
Is that all right?
Is that all right with you?
Is that all right, yeah?

If I give my gun away when it's loaded
Is that all right, yeah?
If you don't shoot it, how am I supposed to hold it?
Is that all right, yeah?

I give my gun away when it's loaded
Is that all right?
Is that all right with you?
And is that all right, yeah?

Is that all right?
Is that all right?
Is that all right with you?
No?

" A Long December" - The Counting Crows

Well I've decided to blog about this song for a pretty lame reason - it's December. As much as I dislike the winter months, December is an exception. December is "Christmas Month". This means everyone is happy because they are shopping, getting/giving gifts, eating good food and drinking their faces off. As lame as it sounds I like December quite a bit because I know in addition to all of the aforementioned things it also means getting to spend a lot of time with my family and friends. I feel truly blessed because I have a huge extended family and a group of amazing friends. All of the good things December brings make it a bit easier to tolerate the bitter, cold weather and short, gloomy days.

December being the last month of the year is usually a time for people to reflect. To think about their past year and make their resolutions for the "New" year. I can honestly say that this past year for me has been one of the hardest and one of the best years of my life. My last long term relationship ended last winter and dealing with something like that is always difficult. He was my rock and I thought that I would fall apart without him. As hard as it was to pick up the pieces I know that I am stronger and better for it. I made a resolution to myself that I would stay single for awhile, and really focus on myself. It is amazing the things you can accomplish when you don't have anyone to rely on or worry about but yourself. I made a whole group of new friends and met so many incredible people. I made much more time for my family. I worked towards and achieved a promotion at my job. I traveled to several new places. I pursued a bizarre new combination of hobbies like belly dancing, shooting and blogging. I renewed my passion for old hobbies, like guitar, photography and piano. They say "You don't know what you have until it's gone", but for me it was losing something that made me realize what I didn't have. So yes, I lost a boyfriend, but I gained me. Do yourself a favor and look back on your year. If you're anything like me you probably don't even realize how lucky you are until you write it all down.

Now I'm sure you know this song, I would think most people do. "A Long December", is a slow kind of melancholy song, but if you listen to the lyrics it's a song about hope, not sadness. The lead singer of the Counting Crows, Adam Duritz, has the soul of a poet. This is obvious even through the history of the band's name. The name was derived from a divination rhyme Duritz heard in the movie "Signs of Life" The band actually uses the rhyme in their song "A Murder of One".  FYI a "Murder" is the word that describes a group of crows. Nice Pun Duritz.

"Well I dreamt I saw you walking up a hillside in the snow / Casting shadows on the winter sky as you stood there, counting crows / One for sorrow, two for joy / Three for girls and four for boys / Five for silver, six for gold / Seven for a secret never to be told.".

In the UK the rhyme is well known but uses magpies instead of crows. It's a superstition that if you see a single magpie you should greet it to deflect the "sorrow".

Duritz has stated that he wrote the song after a friend of his (rumored ex-girlfriend) was hit by a car. Counting Crows were in the middle of recording an album and Duritz spent all of December and most of January/February visiting the hospital. After recording one night at 2am, he drove up to visit two of his friends at their house,  known as "Hillside Manor". He returned home and wrote the song in the early hours of the morning. The band recorded it that same day after practicing only 7 times. As for the song's meaning Duritz said, " It's a song about looking back on your life and seeing changes happening, and for once for me, looking forward and thinking, ya know, things are gonna change for the better - 'maybe this year will be better than the last' - and so, like a lot of songs on the end of an album it's not about everything turning out great, but it at least it is about hope... and the possibilities..."

So even if you think you have nothing to look forward to in the New Year,  remember that you always have one thing; hope.  Without getting too cliche' here,  look back on the year and count only your blessings and not your failures.  Try to remember only the good moments, and take Duritz's advice and,"Hold on to these moments as they pass."

A long December and there's reason to believe

Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can't remember the last thing that you said as you were leavin'
Now the days go by so fast

And it's one more day up in the canyons
And it's one more night in Hollywood
If you think that I could be forgiven...I wish you would

The smell of hospitals in winter
And the feeling that it's all a lot of oysters, but no pearls
All at once you look across a crowded room
To see the way that light attaches to a girl

And it's one more day up in the canyons
And it's one more night in Hollywood
If you think you might come to California...I think you should

Drove up to Hillside Manor sometime after two a.m.
And talked a little while about the year
I guess the winter makes you laugh a little slower,
Makes you talk a little lower about the things you could not show her

And it's been a long December and there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can't remember all the times I tried to tell my myself
To hold on to these moments as they pass

And it's one more day up in the canyon
And it's one more night in Hollywood
It's been so long since I've seen the ocean...I guess I should

"Elderly Woman Behind the Counter In A Small Town" - Pearl Jam

I try quite hard not to blog about the same artist twice. Yet. But I think this doesn't really count, because the song I wrote about before, (Trouble) was a cover, and it was Eddie Vedder's solo stuff anyways. So there are two things I wanted to share with you, 1) The story I had heard about this song initially, and 2) The real story behind the song.

I initially wanted to write about this song because I had heard an amazing story behind it. I often talk about Gimli, Manitoba in my blog. At one point Gimli would host this huge outdoor music festival called Sunfest. One year Pearl Jam actually played at Sunfest. So the story goes that Vedder stopped by a gas station in Gimli, where an "elderly woman" was behind the counter. She, being old and all, had no idea who Vedder was. They chatted for a bit and Vedder was charmed by the old woman. He told her that he wanted to write a song about her and the rest is history. Apparently this story is NOT true, but I'm a bit of a romantic so I'd like to keep on thinking that's the way it happened. I even have a particular gas station in mind, an old rundown looking one right off of highway 8.

Vedder has never actually identified who the woman was that he wrote the song about. In the original lyric page for the song in the album liner notes there was a picture of an "elderly woman". The original picture was replaced because allegedly the woman in the first picture hadn't given permission for her picture to be used. The new liner notes feature a picture of a new woman with the caption "the new and improved woman behind the counter".

I think this is the "new" pic in liner notes
Now I'll get into the real story. First off - you're probably wondering about the name of the song (it's ridiculously long). Apparently the title of this song was the band's hilarious response to the comment that they only name their songs one word, (Daughter, Black, Jeremy etc.). In response to the song's meaning I'll just pull this quote from Vedder because he says it best,

"It's kind of about a lady, and she's getting on in years, and she's stuck in this small town. Small towns fascinate me: You either struggle like hell to get out, to some people want to stay 'cause then they're the big fish in the small pond, and then others just kind of get stuck there. So here she is working in this little place, and then an old flame comes in, and he's probably driving a nice car and looking kind of sharpnot a fancy car, but he's moved on. And then she sees him, and at first she doesn't even remember who he is, and then she realizes who it is. She's just too embarrassed to say 'hello."

I seem to recognize your face
Haunting, familiar, yet I can't seem to place it
Cannot find the candle of thought to light your name
Lifetimes are catching up with me

All these changes taking place
I wish I'd seen the place but no one's ever taken me

Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away

I swear I recognize your breath
Memories, like fingerprints, are slowly raising
Me you wouldn't recall for I'm not my former
It's hard when your stuck upon the shelf

I've changed by not changing at all
Small town predicts my fate
Perhaps that's what no one wants to see

I just want to scream, hello
My god its been so long, never dreamed you'd return
But now here you are and here I am
Hearts and thoughts they fade away

Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade away, yeah
Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade

"Your Rocky Spine" - Great Lake Swimmers

I'm not really interested in sports, and I am definitely not an athlete by any means. I do love swimming though. I'd swim anywhere; ocean, river, pool, but I especially like lakes. Having grown up in North Western Ontario I was surrounded by them. My hometown was situated around Lake Nipigon, the largest lake that lies entirely within the province of Ontario, and feeds into Lake Superior - the largest of the five Great Lakes. A fun little fact for those of you that may not know, but Lake Superior is actually the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area. I'll tell you another thing that I know from experience, not from a textbook. Lake Superior, even in the dead heat of summer, is always effing FREEZING! After a good twenty minutes in the drink you'll be jumping out to warm up.

I grew up swimming in Lake Nipigon and Lake Superior, so Ive acclimated. I'll jump into any lake now without so much as a shiver. I guess what I like most about swimming is the weightlessness. The feeling of just floating. I never feel so small as when i'm treading water and can only see water in any direction I look. I'll admit one of my favorite things to do in summer is skinny dip. Not necessarily in a sexy misbehaving way. I just like getting naked and jumping in the lake. My cousins and I take our jet-ski out mid-day in the summer and do it. No harm no foul. Our parents however, do not think it's funny when we switch our bikini's before arriving back at the beach.

Well, chalk one up for the neighbor again. This is a song recommended by him, I feel almost like he should be getting royalties.. that is, if I made any money off this blog. I suggested he write a guest blog for me (probably one of the only people Id trust to do so). He said he would want to write about something interesting like himself.... so in short, he will not be writing on my blog anytime soon. But I certainly appreciate his recommendations as I've been a bit stumped on what to blog about lately. If you have any suggestions feel free to message me with your songs!

Great Lake Swimmers is a fairly new band, debuting their first album, "Ongaira" in 2007. Clearly good ol' Canadian boys,"Ongaira" is actually the original name for the infamous Niagara Falls. Their songs definetly have a "folk" feel to them. If describing their music in one word, I would say "haunting". Tony Dekker's vocals sound positively ghostly in some of his songs, particularly this one. After analyzing the lyrics to "Your Rocky Spine", it finally hit me. At first glance I assumed it to be a love song, written about someone. I was right in the sense that it's a love song, but it's not about someONE, it's sometTHING. In my opinion Dekker has written this song about Canada, maybe even more specifically Ontario.

Dekker does a brilliant job of personifying the environment in which Canada is famous for. "I was lost in the lakes", "The mountains said I could find you here/they whisper the snow and the leaves in my ear",I was moving across your frozen veneer". Lakes, Snow, Trees, Cold, yup that's Canada if you ask me.

I was lost in the lakes

And the shapes that your body makes
That your body makes, that your body makes
That your body makes

The mountains said I could find you here
They whispered the snow and the leaves in my ear
I traced my finger along your trails
Your body was the map, I was lost in it

Floating over your rocky spine
The glaciers made you, and now youre mine
Floating over your rocky spine
The glaciers made you, and now youre mine

I was moving across your frozen veneer
The sky was dark but you were clear
Could you feel my footsteps
And would you shatter, would you shatter, would you

And with your soft fingers between my claws
Like purity against resolve
I could tell, then and there, that we were formed from the clay
And came from the rocks for the earth to display

They told me to be careful up there
Where the wind blows a venomous rage through your hair
They told me to be careful up there
Where the wind rages through your hair
