"Mouthful of Cavities" - Blind Melon

?Some musicians will always be larger in death than they were in life. Shannon Hoon, the former singer of Blind Melon is one of those icons. Hoon was blessed with amazing vocals, which prior to the band's break, had already caught the ear of Guns N' Roses lead singer, Axl Rose. Blind Melon stumbled on success in the early nineties with their multi-platinum single "No Rain". The video for the single featured the infamous "Bee Girl", and received huge airplay and attention.

Bee Girl
?Every singer or musician has fantasies of playing with their favorite band. Blind Melon made this fantasy a reality for one of their fans, and collaborated on "Mouthful of Cavities". Jena Kraus was a huge Blind Melon fan, and kept showing up at their shows claiming she could sing. The band finally gave the unknown girl a chance and was blown away by her talent. They invited her to sing back up vocals on "Mouthful of Cavities". Her sweet staccato perfectly compliments Hoon's heartbreaking whine.

The late Shannon Hoon
Following in the footsteps of other grunge legends, Hoon over-dosed on drugs and suffered a heart attack in 1995. The remaining members of Blind Melon put together an album called "Nico", in honor of Hoons' baby daughter. Proceeds from the album went to programs that help musicians with drug and alcohol problems.

Blind Melon re-surfaced in 2008 and released a new album "For My Friends", with a new vocalist, Travis Warren. Warren does an amazing job filling in for Hoon and has a set of vocals that bears an uncanny likeness to the deceased vocalist. Shortly after the resurrection of the band - Warren and Blind Melon went their separate ways - citing irreconcilable differences. The band is still looking for a lead singer, but mention that these things take time, as "there are some pretty big shoes to fill."

? ???
This is a mouthful of cavities literally
In my opinion, "Mouthful of Cavities" appears to be a testament to Hoon's struggle with drug addiction. The term "Mouthful of Cavities" may not be so much a metaphorical reference as it is literal. Many drug addicts have a a variety of dental problems. The combination of chemicals they ingest and lack of personal hygiene cause many addicts to destroy their teeth. He alludes to someone's (or his own) mouth, again later in the song, "See I haven't seen him smile in a little while." The lack of a "smile" is Hoon telling us he's unhappy. In several lines of the song he outlines how strong his addiction is, and "How Im desperately in need." He's recognizes his weakness and pleads, "please give me a little more." The most tragic part of the song is when Hoon seems to admit he knows that his addiction will kill him, "Cause one of these days, this will die/So will me and so will you.

Mouthful of cavities [Headful of...]

Your soul's a bowl of jokes [My soul's...]
And everyday you remind me [...I remind me]
How I'm desperately in need

See, I got a lot of fiends around
And they're peaking through nothing new
They see you
They see everything you do [And everything...]
See everything on the inside, out [...inside, yeah]

Oh, please give me a little more
And I'll push away those baby blues
Cause one of these days this will die
So will me and so will you

I write a letter to a friend of mine [I got a letter from a friend...]
I tell him how much I used to love watch him smile
See I haven't seen him smile in a little while [And I haven't...]
Haven't seen him smile in a little while [...seen you smile...]
But, I know you're laughing from the inside out [ommitted...
??
Laughin' from the inside out
I know you're laughing from the inside out
Laughing from the inside

From the inside
From the inside
From the inside
From the inside out

"Hang" - Matchbox 20

There is no way you could have lived through the 90's without having heard a song from the Matchbox 20 album "Yourself or Something Like It". It was ridiculously popular, certified multi-platinum in Canada and featured hits such as, "3 A.M" and "Push". The interesting part about this album is that Rob Thomas, lead singer of the band, originally wrote most of the songs as acoustic with piano. If you search a bit you'll be able to find most tracks off of this album in acoustic version, "Shame", "Unwell", "Bent", "3 A.M" to name a few. The acoustic versions, in my opinion, are even better than the recorded versions, as you really get a sense of Thomas's talent as a vocalist and a musician.

Another interesting fact is the controversy behind the album cover of "Yourself or Something Like It". Nine years after the release of the album Frank Torres, who is featured on the cover art, sued Matchbox 20. Torres claimed he had never given permission to use the photo and the release had caused him "mental anguish."

Thomas has said at live shows that "Hang", was written about two of his friends that liked each other, but moved to separate places, and never ended up getting together. Reading through the lyrics it reminds me of a situation Ive seen many times. Being from a small town you're friends with everyone growing up, and there's always that friend that you liked but never pursued. That one person that was always kind of on your mind. As is the story of small towns most people grow up, move out and move on, but there is always that handful of people that stay. Neither ever understands each other's reason to stay or go, and that's exemplified in the two contrasting lyrics, She knows, she's been here too few years to feel this old," and "He knows she's been here too few years, to be gone."

The people that leave - never come back, and if they visit it's as a different person. The people that stay -don't seem to change, like someone standing still in the street while traffic moves on all around them. When these two types of people fall for each other it inevitably doesn't work out. Either way someone has to compromise.

It's often said, "You can take the person out of the small town, but you can't take the small town out of the person". I often think in some instances "you can't take the person out of the small town". I myself was in this situation at one point, except he compromised and actually moved away with me. In the end it didn't work out. My heart and my head were here, and his were back home. We never really talked about what happened until years later when we got back in touch. He said, "You know I loved you, Im sorry it didn't work out, but I just couldn't live anywhere but back home." This song reminds me of him, and us, and all of my other friends who found themselves in that same situation. Having to choose between being with the one you want, and being in the place you want is never an easy choice.

She grabs her magazines

She packs her things and she goes
She leaves the pictures hanging on the wall, she burns all
Her notes and she knows, she's been here too few years
To feel this old

He smokes his cigarette, he stays outside 'till it's gone
If anybody ever had a heart, he wouldn't be alone
He knows, she's been here too few years, to be gone

And we always say, it would be good to go away, someday
But if there's nothing there to make things change
If it's the same for you I'll just hang

The trouble understand, is she got reasons he don't
Funny how he couldn't see at all, 'til she grabbed up her coat
And she goes, she's been here too few years to take it all in stride
But still it's much too long, to let hurt go (you let her go)
And we always say, it would be good to go away, someday

But if there's nothing there to make things change
If it's the same for you I'll just hang
The same for you
I'll always hang

Well I always say, it would be good to go away
But if things don't work out like we think
And there's nothing there to ease this ache
But if there's nothing there to make things change
If it's the same for you, I'll just hang

"I'll Be Your Lover, Too" - Van Morrison

I've wanted to write about this song for awhile, but couldn't quite find the right angle.  There is no story, no background, no meaning - I just really adore this song.  I can't take credit for finding this gem though.   It's a little known song, you can find it on Van Morrison's album "His Band &  The Street Choir".  A friend actually turned me on to it.  He's a "mans - man" type of guy, so I was pretty intrigued when he told me he was a sucker for this song that he originally heard playing at the end of "Proof of Life".  The song was also featured in "Moonlight Mile".  He said that when he listened he thought it was a really sad song, but after listening to the lyrics he realized it was just the opposite.

This is a completely different Morrison than that of the "Brown Eyed Girl" Van.  Every once in awhile you hear a song that's so bone-chillingly beautiful it makes you a bit teary eyed.  This is definitely one of those songs.  The lyrics are romantic, but in a non-cheesy way.  I love the into " I'll be your man - and I'll understand - and i'll do my best - to take good care of you."  Because that's what love essentially is right?  Finding someone who can understand you, and take care of you.  It's not always lust and passion and attraction.  Sometimes you find yourself most in love with someone because you trust them - and they cherish you.  So thank you Van Morrison for writing a love song that more accurately describes "love" than most others.
Van Morrison

You can tell how emotional Morrison is because his voice cracks at several parts during the song.  It's the kind of song you want to see performed live so that you can watch the artist's face while they're singing it.  As I mentioned this song is quite unknown, originally released in 1970.  I expect it will become popular again any day now though, because through my research I discovered teen heart-throb, Robert Pattison, covered it. It's too bad most tweens will have no idea Morrison was originally responsible for this masterpiece. Although Pattison does a good job, and I'll give him credit, he doesn't do it justice like Morrison does.

I'll be your man

I'll understand
And do my best
to take good care of you
Yes I will

You'll be my queen
I'll be your king
And I'll be your lover too
Yes I will

Derry down green
Color of my dream
A dream that's daily coming true
I'll tell you
When day is through
I will come to you
And tell you of your many charms

And you'll look at me
with eyes that see
And melt into each other's arms
And so I come to be the one
who's always standing next to you

Reach out for me
So I can be the one
who's always reaching out for you
Yes I will, yes I will

You'll be my queen
I'll be you king
And I'll be your lover too

"Sleepwalker" - The Wallflowers

Since Bob Dylan is my "God", I guess that would make his son, Jakob Dylan the equivalent of my "Jesus". The thing that sets Jakob Dylan apart from most other famous musician's offspring is that his genes are not his claim to fame. He doesn't leverage his famous DNA to further his career. Everything Jakob has accomplished has been through his own talent and perseverance. It can't have been easy to succeed in the shadow of his famous father, but Jakob has held his own. In an interview with Jakob, Scott Gold, a Times staff writer, describes the cross that Jakob bears; "For 45 years, Bob Dylan's fans have walked a fine line between devoted and obsessive. One piece of fascination -- to both artists' chagrin -- has long focused on Jakob Dylan, the only Dylan child who elected to become a recording artist.

Jakob was born the youngest of four children to Bob Dylan and his ex-wife Sara. Bob and Sara had the highest profile relationship of any of Dylan's romances. At least two of Bob's songs were directly written about her, "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands", and "Sara". The latter of which was an attempt to reconcile their disintegrating marriage. Jakob has commented that the Bob Dylan album, "Blood on the Tracks", is effectively a conversation between his parents. He has also admitted that one of his dads more famous songs, Forever Young, was written about him.

Jakob fronted the successful nineties band, The Wallflowers. He has also had a successful solo career as well. "Sleepwalker", was the first single off of The Wallflowers third album, "Breach". Very much like his father, much of what Jakob writes is mysterious and complicated. To sit and try decipher this song would drive me mad, so I won't offer my opinion on what the song means this time - instead i'll offer a bit of insight into one of the lyrics.

Bob Dylan often referred to famed folk singer, Sam Cooke, in his writing and Jakob Dylan seems to have followed suit. One fan breaks down the reference for us; "Cupid, don't draw back your bow, Sam Cooke didn't know what I know", refers to Cooke, in at least two different ways. Sam Cooke wrote and sang "Cupid", (Cupid, draw back your bow.."). Dylan reverses the line and asks "Cupid" to spare him from falling in love. He also plays on another one of Cooke's lyrics, "I don't know much about history..geography..(etc.) but I know that I love you and I know that if you love me too, what a wonderful world it would be." Jakob sings, "Sam Cooke didn't know what I know", meaning that love isn't the wonderful thing Cooke thought it was.

There is essence of a young Bob Dylan in Jakob Dylan's gravelly voice, and in the sophistication of his lyrics. He is very much like his father in the sense that he remains a mystery to the media and keeps his private life very private. I tried to find the acoustic version of "Sleepwalker" - which  I prefer - but couldn't find a link with video. Definetly download the acoustic version.

Maybe I could be the one they adore

That could be my reputation
It's where I'm from that lets them think I'm a whore
I'm an educated virgin

Sleepwalker, don't be shy
Now don't open your eyes tonight
You'll be the one that defends my life
While I'm dead asleep dreamin'

Cupid, don't draw back your bow
Sam Cooke didn't know what I know
I'll never be your valentine
The sleepwalker in me
And God only know that I've tried

Let me in, let me drown or learn how to swim
Just don't leave me at the window
I could be the one to be your next best friend
You may need someone to hold you

Sleepwalker, take this knife
You may see someone tonight
You'd be the one that saves my life
When I'm dead asleep dreamin'

Cupid, don't draw back your bow
Sam Cooke didn't know what I know
I'll never be your valentine
The sleepwalker in me
And God only know that I've tried

I'm in your movie and everyone looks sad
But I can hear you, your voice, the laughtrack
But you never saw my best scene
The one where I sleep
Sleepwalk into your dreams

Now, sleepwalker, what's my line
It's only a matter of time
Until I learn to open up my eyes
When I'm dead asleep dreamin'
Cupid, don't draw back your bow
Sam Cooke didn't know what I know
I'll never be your valentine
The sleepwalker in me

Now, the sleepwalker in me
Now, the sleepwalker in me
And God only know that I've tried
