"Someone Like You" - Adele

Oh affairs
OK then, it has been MUCH too long since I've posted a sappy love song.  Sorry - had to do it.  I have had "Someone Like You" by Adele on repeat for the last 3 weeks, so I feel like a bit of a traitor if I don't write about it.  Like It's a secret love affair that no one can know about, and as a new rule I'm trying quite hard to cut down on those.

Adele
I first heard a sample of Adele's "Hometown Glory" in "My Hometown" by Jordan Burnell -  a song I've previously blogged about.  This led me to download the full song as well as a few of her other songs.  I liked her work and then pretty much forgot about her.  Now it seems like everyone has jumped on the Adele bandwagon.  I can't blame them - she has incredible pipes, charming British wit, and looks a bit like a  delicate little china doll.  At only 23 years old she's had huge commercial and critical success in the UK and North America, receiving a handful of Grammy awards, BRIT awards and countless other industry nods. Everyone seems to have a bit of a crush on Adele, from British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, who wrote her a thank you letter swooning, "with the troubles that the country's in financially, you're a light at the end of the tunnel", to music site, AllMusic who wrote, "Adele is simply too magical to compare her to anyone."

Adele's vocals are earthy, deep, mature and every so often you hear the slightest hint of her British accent.  Adele has referred to her music style as "heartbroken soul", and this is definetly the genre I'd attach to "Someone Like You."  The song strikes me as a "nice breakup song", (a contradiction in itself I know.)  At the beginning of the song she about discovers that her ex has "settled down", "found a girl", "married now." She realizes that he has moved on with his life while she hasn't, "hoped you'd see my face, And that you'd be reminded that for me it isn't over."  I actually believe that the worst part of a breakup is not the actual "break-up" process, but seeing your ex move on before you.

Every time she scratches her nail..
"Someone Like You" is different from your typical tragic/bitter breakup songs because the protagonist of the song chooses to move on with her life and not dwell on circumstances she can't change.  She doesn't pull a Carrie Underwood and dig the "key into the side of his pretty little suped up 4 wheel drive", or an Alanis Morrisette and wish "every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back I hope you feel it."  She realizes that life will go on and that she will find happiness too, "Nevermind I'll find someone like you." With an attitude that speaks volumes about her maturity and character she seems generally resigned to being happy that her ex is happy, and wishing him well.  I think thats how you know you really care about someone.  Being happy that they are happy, even if you are no longer a part of their life. "I wish nothing but the best for you."

I heard

That you're settled down
That you
Found a girl
And you're
Married now

I heard
That your dreams came true.
Guess she gave you things
I didn't give to you

Old friend
Why are you so shy?
Ain't like you to hold back
Or hide from the light

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it.
I had hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded
That for me it isn't over

Never mind
I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
"Don't forget me," I begged
"I'll remember," you said

"Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead."
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead,
Yeah.

You know how the time flies
Only yesterday
It was the time of our lives

We were born and raised
In a summer haze
Bound by the surprise
Of our glory days

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
But I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it.
I had hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded
That for me it isn't over.

Never mind
I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
"Don't forget me," I begged
"I'll remember," you said

"Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead."

Nothing compares
No worries or cares
Regrets and mistakes

They are memories made.
Who would have known
How bittersweet this would taste?

Never mind
I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
"Don't forget me," I begged

"I'll remember," you said
"Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead"

Never mind
I'll find someone like you
I wish nothing but the best for you too
"Don't forget me," I begged
"I'll remember," you said

"Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead"
Sometimes it lasts in love
But sometimes it hurts instead
