No type of vacation is quite as sexy as a tropical one. The warm weather, the ocean, the anonymity. What a feeling it is to be surrounded by hundreds of people that have no idea who you are. You can do what you please, with who you please and no one would ever know. Ahh the vacation hook-up. For single, and not-so single people alike it's the high point of any trip (I'm assuming..). You meet someone vaguely attractive (or not) and end up rolling around on the beach with them at 3am on a Wednesday morning. You brush the sand off of yourself and say your goodbye's - knowing full well that you will likely never see this person again. This goodbye is never a sad goodbye - it's one of those "don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened" situations.
You're probably wondering where I'm going with this - and whether this blog posting is going to turn R-Rated and feature some amateur photo's... Don't worry your pretty little heads blog readers, because there is a method to my madness. The reason I'm chirping on about tropical vacation hook-ups is because it's what immediately came to my mind after hearing this song. The theme of the song is certainly not about hooking up - it's actually about breaking up. "Boa Sorte/Good Luck" is a duet performed in Brazilian Portuguese (Vanessa da Mata), and English (Ben Harper). If it wasn't for Ben's lyrics though, you would assume it was a love song. I think that's the beauty of South/Central American accents, anything spoken in the language sounds ridiculously exotic and sexy.
It kills me a bit every time, but again - I give credit to The Neighbor on this one. He suggested this song and actually told me a story that involved Vanessa da Mata being a poor prostitute that was catapulted into stardom. I can't verify that, and trust me I've googled "Vanessa da Mata + prostitute way" too many times to prove otherwise. "Boa Sorte/Good Luck" topped the charts in Brazil and became a number one hit. The song is a duet with Vanessa da Mata that features American Reggae/Blues artist, Ben Harper. The contrast of languages and their voices are perfect - sexy, sultry Vanessa and growly Ben. The odd thing about the English part of this song is the words don't seem to actually rhyme. I'm assuming they follow more of a typical rhyming pattern in the Brazilian Portuguese parts.
This is a straight up - break up song. There is no drama, or resentment, it seems to be very black and white. The relationship is over - and "Boa Sorte/Good Luck". I particularly like, "I've got nothing left to say, It's only words, And what I feel, wont' change". It's very straightforward, they are going their separate ways and there is nothing to talk about. They don't seem to hate each other, and wish each other well. In most cases when you love someone, if you can't make them happy, you would hope they could be with someone that did. That is of course assuming you end on good terms. I realize that I am a bit of an anomaly in the fact that I remain on good terms with mostly everyone I've ever dated. I understand the need to build a bridge and get over it, but not the need to burn it. Despite the fact that it obviously didn�t work out there was clearly something about that person that I liked, and I am always conscious about that. There isn't a "caring" switch that you can just turn off after a break-up. You care, and if you don't, you're lying to yourself. From this point on this will be my break-up theme song haha. Instead of discussing anything I"ll just email a clip of this song with the lyrics attached ;)

If you've ever looked up the definition of the word "Home" in the dictionary you'll find something interesting. It lists the typical definition you'd expect, but then it continues, "Home", is also used to refer to the geographical area in which a person grew up or feels they belong. As an alternative to the definition of "Home" as a physical locale, home may be perceived to have no physical definition - instead, home may relate instead to a mental or emotional state of refuge or comfort."
If you Google my name, (but you can't, because you don't know it), you�d find a few articles on me, mostly work related. You'd also find (embarrassingly enough), a link that identities me as a past winner of a poetry contest for theIcelandic Festival in Gimli, MB. It doesn't show the actual poem that I won for, but I had penned a tribute to Gimli, a small Icelandic community on Lake Winnipeg. Gimli is my "Home". One of my accomplishments is that the Premier of Iceland used a line from my poem in a speech he delivered. The line was, "Home is not where you live, but where you feel most alive".
I have visited Gimli with my family several times a year, every year - since I was born. I lived there myself for about a year, and now my parents live there. I'll retire, grow old, and probably die there. It's hard to describe the feeling I get when I'm there, but mostly I feel safe and happy. I make a point of seeing the Lake every time I'm there, (which really isn't that hard). Sometimes I find myself missing the lake, in the same way you'd miss a person. I won't ramble on with boring details and stories about Gimli, but I'm sure many of you have your own "home" that you can relate to. I'm like one of those awful "relationship people" that can't stop gushing about their significant other, and won't shut up about how great they are. Except instead of talking about a person I swoon over Gimli. So I�ll spare you the details and just attach my favorite picture instead.
I have to give credit where credit is due and admit that my neighbor turned me on to this song. And as much as my neighbor grinds my gears sometimes, he does have exceptional taste in music. If there is one thing we can agree on it's music. My first impression of this song, was that it was recorded in the 70's or 80's, because of the musical style. Oddly enough "Home" was released on the debut album from Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros in 2009. The song received huge chart success in Australia, but their most exposure was gained from the YouTube video, "Guy walks across America", by Conscious Minds. The song "Home" was the soundtrack for this amazing that video uses stop-motion video to document a guy in Levi jeans walking across America. See the video below.

The song lyrics are goofy, "Well, hot & heavy, pumpkin pie, chocolate candy, Jesus Christ, There ain�t nothin� please me more than you", but ridiculously catchy. I think as a rule any song with whistling in it will undoubtedly get stuck in your head. My favorite line of this whole song is, "Home is wherever I'm with you." Home doesn't necessarily have to be a place, it could be a feeling. So let "Home" be whatever you want it to be, a place, a meal, a song, a smell, or a person."

For most people High School graduation is considered a "Defining Moment". I'm sure you've heard your English teacher toss around that phrase quite a bit - it basically means a moment in your life that defines you as a person. It may not be that exact "moment" that you receive your diploma, however it will certainly be in one of the "moments" that follow. This is it kid. From here on out you get to do what you want (mostly). You can choose College, University, job, whatever, but the point is - it's all you. I remember looking around at my graduating class (approx. 50 people ... small town), and feeling a bit sad, and a bit scared. Despite not really caring about some of the people in my graduating class, these were the people I grew up with. Some of them I"d known since kindergarten, some were my best friends. These were the people that I got drunk with for the first time, smoked my first joint with, and made out with at random bush parties. These were the people I'd made fun of, and fought with, and hated. If nothing else they were familiar. And familiarity is comfort.
Being from a small town meant if I wanted to have a career or continue my education I'd have to hit the road. That road was going to be Thunder Bay (only about an hour away), but still, from this point on this Chickie was booted out of the proverbial "nest", and expected to fly (mostly) on my own. My parents gave me a book when I graduated, the requisite"Oh The Places You'll Go", byDr. Seuss. That book is pretty much loved and read by everyone, from 3 to 103. It's message is clear: there is a whole world of things, places and possibilities out there , and it's up to you what you make of it. At my first "big-girl" job, day one - I wrote out a quote from the book and stuck it to my bulletin board. Five years later it's still stuck up, on a different bulletin board now, as a reminder that I am the one in control of my life. "You have brains in your head. you have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go."
At my graduation we played the typicalGreen Day, "Time of your Life" anthem, and some horrid song by Vitamin C (ughh). The song we should have played is , "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)". It's not really a song in the sense that it's very musical. It has a background beat and some samples mixed in, but mainly it's spoken. In 1997 Mary Schmich published an essay called "Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young" as a column in the Chicago Tribune. Schmich explained that if she were asked to write a commencement speech this is what she would write. Urban legend followed the essay, and it was commonly believed that the infamous writer, Kurt Vonnegut, had delivered it as a commencement speech at an MIT graduation ceremony. Even after Schmich wrote a follow up article discrediting the rumor people still believed it. When Baz Luhrman tried to get permission to use the essay on his album, he initially tried to contact Vonnegut in error to get permission.
If you're looking for something to rock out too, this is not your tune. If you're looking for some philosophic advice on your future - definitely listen, and listen carefully. This is one of those songs where you're going to want to read the lyrics. The song distributes the kind of wisdom which can only be learned from experience, like, "Don't worry about the future, or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind: the kind that blindsides you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday." It tells you to "sing", "dance", "floss", "stretch", and "Get to know your parents; you never know when they'll be gone for good." As for your siblings it reminds you to "Be nice to your siblings: they're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future." As for friends, "Understand that friends come and go, but what a precious few should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps and geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young"
Of all of the advice that is dispensed there are two pieces which have always stuck with me. I find these two pieces to be the most true and excellent pieces of advice you can try to live by.
"Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse,but you never know when either one might run out."
"Don't be reckless with other people's hearts; don't put up with people who are reckless with yours"
Listen to this song, and think about it. I mean actually think about it. Take one of these pieces of advice and and follow it. Memorize it and try to incorporate it into your life.

Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis or reliable then my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice....now.
Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, nevermind, you won't understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded, but trust me in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.
Don't worry about the future, or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum.

Sing.

Remember compliments you receive; forget the insults. (if you succeed in doing this, tell me how).
Keep your old love letters; throw away your old bank statements.
Stretch.
Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives; some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still don't.
Get plenty of Calcium. Be kind to your knees -- you'll miss them when they're gone.
Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40; maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary.
Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself, either. Your choices are half chance, so are everybody else's.
Enjoy your body: use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or what other people think of it; it's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.
Dance...even if you have no where to do it but in your own living room.
Read the directions (even if you don't follow them).
Do not read beauty magazines; they will only make you feel ugly.
Get to know your parents; you never know when they'll be gone for good.
Be nice to your siblings: they're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.
Understand that friends come and go, but what a precious few should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps and geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young.
Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard.
Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.
Travel.
Accept certain inalienable truths: prices will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old; and when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble, and children respected their elders.
Respect your elders.

I'm not originally from T-Bay, (That's what all the cool kids call it), but I did live and go to school there for several years, and I like to think of it as an extension of my much smaller hometown. Thunder Bay is a small city in North Western Ontario nestled on the shores of Lake Superior. There are a lot of things that T-Bay is not, but one thing it is, is downright gorgeous. Lakes, mountains, trees, - the scenes you usually only see on the Discovery Channel, that's what T-Bay is known for.
Burnell has produced an amazing hip hop anthem lyrically, musically and visually. I�m a graduate of the Broadcasting Television program at Confederation College, and there is one thing that has become apparent to me; The people that grew up in NWO (North Western Ontario, son) have a ridiculous amount of drive and talent. With limited resources and the encumbrance of being geographically isolated, T-Bay has managed to spit out some solid home-grown talent. Matt Popowich of Westfort Films has produced a stunning cinematic celebration of all that is T-Bay. "My Home Town" takes some of Thunder Bay's local stories and landmarks and puts them out there for the world to see.
As someone who grew up in the area it's a nice reminder of home. If you're from T-Bay you'll get every single reference in this song, and if you're not - you'll probably learn something new. Burnell shouts out to the fact that T-Bay marks the spot where famed Canadian, Terry Fox, ended his cross Canada run for Cancer. That T-Bay was the place where Neil Young first met Stephen Stills who later went on to form the infamous Crosby, Stills and Nash. That T-Bay boasts the most pro hockey players per capita. He also throws reference to local landmarks like The Hoito, Silver Islet and the legend of The Sleeping Giant.
The combination of Burnell's rapping mixed with samples from "Hometown" Glory" by Adele, makes this song extremely catchy. It's apparent Burnell put a lot of thought into writing this song, and in an interview with Joe Fiortio of the Toronto Star, Burnell says that it took him awhile to write the lyrics, because he was "nervous, and didn't want to misrepresent my city." He has since went on to receive success and recognition through his song, and is currently waiting on a record deal. So Good luck Jordan, and thank you for giving Thunder Bay some of the recognition it deserves.
