Searching For Love
(Mark Alvarado Not Private Mix)
No type of vacation is quite as sexy as a tropical one. The warm weather, the ocean, the anonymity. What a feeling it is to be surrounded by hundreds of people that have no idea who you are. You can do what you please, with who you please and no one would ever know. Ahh the vacation hook-up. For single, and not-so single people alike it's the high point of any trip (I'm assuming..). You meet someone vaguely attractive (or not) and end up rolling around on the beach with them at 3am on a Wednesday morning. You brush the sand off of yourself and say your goodbye's - knowing full well that you will likely never see this person again. This goodbye is never a sad goodbye - it's one of those "don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened" situations.

You're probably wondering where I'm going with this - and whether this blog posting is going to turn R-Rated and feature some amateur photo's... Don't worry your pretty little heads blog readers, because there is a method to my madness. The reason I'm chirping on about tropical vacation hook-ups is because it's what immediately came to my mind after hearing this song. The theme of the song is certainly not about hooking up - it's actually about breaking up. "Boa Sorte/Good Luck" is a duet performed in Brazilian Portuguese (Vanessa da Mata), and English (Ben Harper). If it wasn't for Ben's lyrics though, you would assume it was a love song. I think that's the beauty of South/Central American accents, anything spoken in the language sounds ridiculously exotic and sexy.

I think that's the beauty of South/Central American accents, anything spoken in the language sounds ridiculously exotic and sexy. This is a straight up - break up song. There is no drama, or resentment, it seems to be very black and white. The relationship is over - and "Boa Sorte/Good Luck". I particularly like, "I've got nothing left to say, It's only words, And what I feel, wont' change". It's very straightforward, they are going their separate ways and there is nothing to talk about. They don't seem to hate each other, and wish each other well. In most cases when you love someone, if you can't make them happy, you would hope they could be with someone that did. That is of course assuming you end on good terms. I realize that I am a bit of an anomaly in the fact that I remain on good terms with mostly everyone I've ever dated. I understand the need to build a bridge and get over it, but not the need to burn it.  Despite the fact that it obviously didnt work out there was clearly something about that person that I liked, and I am always conscious about that. There isn't a "caring" switch that you can just turn off after a break-up. You care, and if you don't, you're lying to yourself. From this point on this will be my break-up theme song haha. Instead of discussing anything  I"ll just email a clip of this song with the lyrics attached ;)

If you've ever looked up the definition of the word "Home" in the dictionary you'll find something interesting. It lists the typical definition you'd expect, but then it continues, "Home", is also used to refer to the geographical area in which a person grew up or feels they belong. As an alternative to the definition of "Home" as a physical locale, home may be perceived to have no physical definition - instead, home may relate instead to a mental or emotional state of refuge or comfort."

I have to give credit where credit is due and admit that my neighbor turned me on to this song. And as much as my neighbor grinds my gears sometimes, he does have exceptional taste in music. If there is one thing we can agree on it's music. My first impression of this song, was that it was recorded in the 70's or 80's, because of the musical style. Oddly enough "Home" was released on the debut album from Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros in 2009. The song received huge chart success in Australia, but  their most exposure was gained from the YouTube video, "Guy walks across America", by Conscious Minds. The song "Home" was the soundtrack for this amazing that video uses stop-motion video to document a guy in Levi jeans walking across America. See the video below.

Dwight Live (1995) For most people High School graduation is considered a "Defining Moment".  I'm sure you've heard your English teacher toss around that phrase quite a bit - it basically means a moment in your life that defines you as a person.  It may not be that exact "moment" that you receive your diploma, however it will certainly be in one of the "moments" that follow.  This is it kid.  From here on out you get to do what you want (mostly).  You can choose College, University, job, whatever, but the point is - it's all you.  I remember looking around at my graduating class (approx. 50 people ... small town), and feeling a bit sad, and a bit scared.  Despite not really caring about some of the people in my graduating class, these were the people I grew up with.  Some of them I"d known since kindergarten, some were my best friends.  These were the people that I got drunk with for the first time, smoked my first joint with, and made out with at random bush parties. These were the people I'd made fun of, and fought with, and hated. If nothing else they were familiar. And familiarity is comfort.

At my graduation we played the typical Green Day, "Time of your Life" anthem, and some horrid song  by Vitamin C (ughh).  The song we should have played is , "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)".  It's not really a song in the sense that it's very musical. It has a background beat and some samples mixed in, but mainly it's spoken.  In 1997 Mary Schmich published an essay called "Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young" as a column in the Chicago Tribune.  Schmich explained that if she were asked to write a commencement speech this is what she would write. Urban legend followed the essay, and it was commonly believed that the infamous writer, Kurt Vonnegut, had delivered it as a commencement speech at an MIT graduation ceremony. Even after Schmich wrote a follow up article discrediting the rumor people still believed it. When Baz Luhrman tried to get permission to use the essay on his album, he initially tried to contact Vonnegut in error to get permission.

Playlist I'm not originally from T-Bay, (That's what all the cool kids call it), but I did live and go to school there for several years, and I like to think of it as an extension of my much smaller hometown. Thunder Bay is a small city in North Western Ontario nestled on the shores of Lake Superior. There are a lot of things that T-Bay is not, but one thing it is, is downright gorgeous. Lakes, mountains, trees, - the scenes you usually only see on the Discovery Channel, that's what T-Bay is known for.
