"Beer" - Reel Big Fish

Trumpets make everything sound good
So what happened to Ska? Anyone? Doesn't a trumpet make anything sound good! I actually forgot about Ska until my recent vacation with an old friend, (clarification: old as in long-time-childhood friend, not old as in wrinkles and liver spots.

Childhood  friends are a funny type of friend - especially if you live in completely different places.  It's hard to keep in constant touch with them about everyday events of your life because they don't know any of the people, places, or things you want to reference. One of my childhood best friends and I connect maybe once a month or so - and give each other highlights of the past few weeks of our lives in a basic, generalized way, ( i.e. got a new job, went on a date with a new boy etc.).  I wouldn't name the company, or the boy for that matter.  I'd refer to the new job as something like, "new marketing job", and I'd assign the boy a demeaning nickname based on a defining characteristic (i.e.  "Firefighter Boy", "Cop-portunity", "Snake Kisser", etc.)

My friend that I just vacationed with, I'll refer to her as "Giraffe Face" from here on out (she knows why), actually only talks to me about once or twice a year.  We've fallen into the creepy routine of having nothing to do with each other until about March, at which point we decide to go on a random vacation together. We meet up and it feels like nothing has ever changed.  We fall back into a comfortable friendship like we still see each other everyday in Gr.11 English class.  As the old, lame, Girl Scouts saying goes, "Make new friends but keep the old, one is silver, the other is gold."  Laugh it up blog readers but there is truth to this ridiculous saying.  I like to think of my old friends as "gold", because even though gold is something you don't wear everyday, and mostly keep locked up in your jewelery box - it's something that you treasure, and something you will never get rid of.

This is me in the mornings
Now Giraffe Face is a morning person.  It should be mentioned that I am most certainly NOT a morning person.  I rarely utter a word or crack a smile before 10am on any given day.  Needless to say mornings were always a bit challenging for us.  Giraffe Face would spring out of bed with the enthusiasm of a baby deer, bouncing around the room opening the blinds, singing, humming, and all around enjoying her life.  If you are also a "un-morning person", you will know that the only thing more annoying than having to wake up before noon, is waking up to happiness.  Morning misery loves company, and I find I can only enjoy my day if I have a considerable amount of time in the morning to sulk and scowl in peace. Most mornings Giraffe Face would wake up and put on her Ipod speakers and blare something by Kanye West or Snoop Dogg, (neither of those things goes well with coffee.) but one morning in particular she put on "Beer" by Reel Big Fish.  Immediately I remembered this song and was reminded of back home.  More specifically partying back home.

Reel Big Fish
There's nothing especially thrilling or unusual about Reel Big Fish, or this song.  The band received their first mainstream success in the 90's with their album, "Turn the Radio Off", and were featured in the movie BASEketball.  I won't get into the lyrics because they are pretty self explanatory.  They remind me of high school (and let's be honest my early twenties as well), when all there was to do was get drunk and make bad decision.  Ah the good old days.

She called me late last night, to say she loved me so
It didn't matter anymore,
I say she never cared
And that she never will,
I'd do it all again
I guess I'll have to wait until then

[chorus]
And if i get drunk well, I'll pass out
On the floor now baby
You won't bother me no more
And if you're drinkin' well, you know
That you're my friend and I say
I think I'll have myself a beer

[verse]
She called me late last night, to say she loved me so
but I guess he changed her mind.
Well I should have known, it wouldn't be all right,
but I can't live without her
So I won't even try...

[chorus]
And if I get drunk well, I'll pass out
On the floor now baby
You won't bother me no more
And if you're drinkin' well, you know
That you're my friend and I say
I think I'll have myself a beer

[interlude]

Maybe some day, I'll think of what to say
Maybe next time I'll remember what to do
She looks like heaven, maybe this is hell
Said she'd do it all again, she'd promise not to tell!

[chorus]
And if I get drunk well, I'll pass out
On the floor now baby
You won't bother me no more
she said,
it's okay boy cause you know
we'll be good friends and I say
I think I'll have myself a beer
I think I'll have myself a beer

Woohoo etc
yeah yeah yeah
woohoohoo

"The Cave" - Mumford & Sons

"Excuse me sir.. which song is this?"
After my Grammy rant, I know I promised you a blog on Mumford & Sons, so here it is my dears. This year has definetly been my year for music. I am typically a Classic Rock gal, but this year I found myself getting into every type of genre - from folk to hip hop. I've had alot of influence from some very music savvy friends - but now that I'm a "blogger" I find myself discovering new music everywhere. I find songs in movies, TV shows, other blogs, and even in stores. In a particularly creepy move, I heard a song that I liked so much while in a store the other day, that I asked to speak with the manager to find out the artist, (for those of you who are curious - it was Mazzy Starry - "Fade Into You").

Mumford & Sons
Now it might be my perspective but I feel like folk & indie music is making a HUGE comeback. Or maybe just becoming more mainstream? I can't even recall the last time a non traditional band like, Mumford & Sons or The Avett Brothers were given a chance to perform at the Grammy's. Or the last time a band like Arcade Fire received proper recognition at such a huge, commercialized, mainstream event. Mumford & Sons released their first album, "Sigh No More", in 2009 and have since received huge critical acclaim from various critics in the UK and North America.

I'm someone that is far more impressed with intelligence than looks. Beauty will always fade before intelligence. Through my research I discovered that Mumford & Sons is much more than just a pretty face. Their lyrics are complex, insightful and draw reference from works  by Shakespeare, John Steinbeck, and The Bible.

The dreamboat himself, Plato
Many fans have cited that "The Cave" seems to reference Greek Philosopher, Plato's, "Allegory of the Cave". Plato's work suggests that underneath the underlying surface of things, there are truths that only the "enlightened" can discover. Coincidentally I think Plato's theory applies to the song itself, as the lyrics of "The Cave" allude to deeper meanings and thoughts not apparent at first glance. Here is a short summary of "Allegory of the Cave"

"Plato describes a group of people who have lived chained to the wall of a cave all of their lives, facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall by things passing in front of a fire behind them, and begin to ascribe forms to these shadows. According to Socrates, the shadows are as close as the prisoners get to viewing reality. He then explains how the philosopher is like a prisoner who is freed from the cave and comes to understand that the shadows on the wall do not constitute reality at all, as he can perceive the true form of reality rather than the mere shadows seen by the prisoners. In addition, the Allegory of the Cave is an attempt to explain the philosopher's place in society: to attempt to enlighten the "prisoners."
Sexy Sirens Seducing Odysseus
Mumford & Sons make a very concise reference in this lyric particularly, "So come out of the cave walking on your hands, And see the world hanging upside down, You can understand dependence, When you know the maker's land." He also references the mythological, seductive "Sirens" from Homer's poem "The Odyssey." "So make your siren's call, And sing all you want, I will not hear what you have to say." There are also at least half a dozen biblical/Christian references that I can spot, "Widows & Orphan's", "The Maker's Land", the list goes on.  Overall the band has done a fantastic job of creating an addictive, haunting song that incorporates profound ideas and works.

It's empty in the valley of your heart

The sun, it rises slowly as you walk
Away from all the fears
And all the faults you've left behind

The harvest left no food for you to eat
You cannibal, you meat-eater, you see
But I have seen the same
I know the shame in your defeat

But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

Because I have other things to fill my time
You take what is yours and I'll take mine
Now let me at the truth
Which will refresh my broken mind

So tie me to a post and block my ears
I can see widows and orphans through my tears
I know my call despite my faults
And despite my growing fears

But I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again

So come out of your cave walking on your hands
And see the world hanging upside down
You can understand dependence
When you know the maker's land

So make your siren's call
And sing all you want
I will not hear what you have to say

Because I need freedom now
And I need to know how
To live my life as it's meant to be

And I will hold on hope
And I won't let you choke
On the noose around your neck

And I'll find strength in pain
And I will change my ways
I'll know my name as it's called again
