"My City of Ruins" - Bruce Springsteen

Jon Stewart at the Kennedy Center
There are no words exceptional enough to describe the legend that is Bruce Springsteen. The best depiction I have ever heard of Springsteen was by Jon Stewart - who honored Bruce at the Kennedy Center Honors Gala Dinner in 2009.
"But that is not the power of Bruce Springsteen.  It is that whenever I see Bruce Springsteen do anything, he empties the tank.  Every time.  And the beautiful thing about this man is that he empties that tank for his family, he empties that tank for his art, he empties that tank for his audience, and he empties it for his country.  And we, on the receiving end of that beautiful gift, are ourselves rejuvenated, if not redeemed.  And I thank you."

Asbury Park, NJ
Bruce Springsteen. "The Boss".  Springsteen is as much a story teller as he is a musician.  The story that "My City of Ruins" tells is one of his most beautiful and haunting in light of all the recent disasters. Springsteen being a pure blooded Jersey boy originally wrote the song in 2000 for a benefit for the revitalization of Asbury Park, NJ.  The song described the current state of disrepair the park was in - but ended on a hopeful note, challenging the city to "rise up".

His song took on new meaning after the tragedy of 9/11.  Springsteen opened up the "America: A Tribute to Heroes" telethon with this song.  He dedicated the song as "a prayer for our fallen brothers and sisters."

"The Boss"
In "My City of Ruins" Springsteen "empties the tank".  He describes a city in ruins so vividly that in your mind you can see the "boarded up windows".  The song acts as a metaphor for anything that is "in ruins", a relationship, friendship, a life etc.  The message of the song is clear - that there is always hope.  No matter the destruction, the tragedy, the heartache; we as humans have the basic instinct to survive.  We all have the ability to "rise up" out of tragedy.

If one man with his guitar and harmonica has the ability to bring a nation to tears - then united we will  have the ability to overcome whatever obstacles we are faced with. Whether in reference to Asbury Park, 9/11, New Orleans, Haiti or a tribulation in your own life we all possess the strength to prevail over adversity.

There's a blood red circle
on the cold dark ground
and the rain is falling down
The church doors blown open
I can hear the organ's song
But the congregation's gone

My city of ruins
My city of ruins

Now the sweet veils of mercy
drift through the evening trees
Young men on the corner
like scattered leaves
The boarded up windows
The hustlers and thieves
While my brother's down on his knees

My city of ruins
My city of ruins

Come on rise up!
Come on rise up!

Now there's tears on the pillow
darling where we slept
and you took my heart when you left
without your sweet kiss
my soul is lost, my friend
Now tell me how do I begin again?

My city's in ruins
My city's in ruins

Now with these hands
I pray Lord
with these hands
for the strength Lord
with these hands
for the faith Lord
with these hands
I pray Lord
with these hands
for the strength Lord
with these hands
for the faith Lord
with these hands

Come on rise up!
Come on rise up!
Rise up

"Brian Wilson" - The Barenaked Ladies

Many people are probably familiar with the song "Brian Wilson" by the The Barenaked Ladies, but few probably know the orgin behind it. The song chronicles the infamous breakdown of The Beach Boy's legend - Brian Wilson.

Brian Wilson with Eugene Landy
In the early 1970's the The Beach Boy's lead singer/song-writer, Brian Wilson, had relinquished much of the creative control and input he had with the band. He spent 3 years sitting in his bedroom over-eating, taking drugs and sleeping. By 1975 Wilson's wife hired a controversial therapist - Eugene Landy to help Wilson.

Landy fired Wilson from The Beach Boys, isolated him from his friends and family by relocating him to a remote island in Hawaii, and took complete control over every aspect of Wilson's life. Landy allegedly co-write Wilson's solo album, charged him astronomical fees (upwards of $35,000/month + incidentals) and even had himself included in Brian's will.  Landy was ultimately charged with violating ethics and moral codes and surrendered his license. This incident became one of the biggest music scandals of all time.

Steven Page channeled Brian Wilson

Coincidentally The Barenaked Ladies vocalist/guitarist, Steven Page, wrote the song on his 20th Birthday while he was holed up like a hermit in his parents basement. In the song he muses, "I'm lying in bed, Just like Brian Wilson did." Wilson eventually got wind of the song and asked The Barenaked Ladies if "it was cool" that he covered it.  On his way out of the meeting he offered the band one piece of advice, "don't eat too much." He re-arranged the song A Capella and performed it at some of his shows.

Drove downtown in the rain nine-thirty on a Tuesday night,
just to check out the late-night record shop.
Call it impulsive, call it compulsive, call it insane,
but when I'm surrounded I just can't stop.

It's a matter of instinct, it's a matter of conditioning,
it's a matter of fact.
You can call me Pavlov's dog.
Ring a bell and I'll salivate. How'd you like that?
Dr. Landy tell me you're not just a pedagogue,
cause right now I'm

Chorus
Lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did
Well I'm lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did.

So I'm lying here, just staring at the ceiling tiles.
and I'm thinking about what to think about.
Just listening and relistening to Smiley Smile,
and I'm wondering if this is some kind of creative drought
because I am

Chorus

And if you want to find me I'll be out in the sandbox,
wondering where the hell all the love has gone.
Playing my guitar and building castles in the sun,
and singing "Fun, Fun, Fun."

Chorus

I had a dream that I was three hundred pounds
and though I was very heavy,
I floated 'til I couldn't see the ground
I floated 'til I could not see the ground
Somebody help me, I couldn't see the ground
Somebody help me, I couldn't see the ground
Somebody help me because I'm
Chorus

Drove downtown in the rain nine-thirty on a Tuesday night.
Just to check out the late-night record shop.
Call it impulsive, call it compulsive, call it insane;
but when I'm surrounded I just can't stop.

Sing It Back

The Sheffield-based dance-pop duo Moloko is the end result of Irish-born singer Roisin Murphy's attempt to pick up mixer/producer Mark Brydon at a 1994 party with the come-on, "Do you like my tight sweater? See how it fits my body." Brydon saw musical potential in her attitude, and the two formed a creative and romantic partnership. Murphy, who never sang outside of the shower before, was a newcomer to the music business. However, Brydon had many years of experience with U.K. house music acts House Arrest and Cloud 9, helped found Sheffield's Fon studios, and remixed artists like Eric B & Rakim and Psychic TV. Soon after forming Moloko, they released their debut single, "Where Is the What If the What Is in the Why?," and signed to Echo Records. The band's full-length debut, inevitably named Do You Like My Tight Sweater?, came out in 1995 and was an equal mix of Murphy's slinky attitude and Brydon's musical prowess. The album combined dance, funk, and trip-hop elements in an approach similar to Portishead or Massive Attack but with a sense of humor and sass unique to Moloko. Though the album's U.S. release occurred nearly a year later, the single "Fun for Me" was featured prominently on the Batman & Robin soundtrack and received some radio airplay. Moloko toured with kindred musical spirits such as Pulp, built a home studio, and recorded the follow-up to Do You Like My Tight Sweater?, titled I Am Not a Doctor. Released in 1998 (and late 1999 in the U.S.), the album continued in Moloko's witty, funky tradition. The group's third album, Things to Make and Do, was issued in the U.K. in the spring of 2000.

"Already Over Me" - The Rolling Stones

Giddiyup
Strippers.  Now that I have your attention.. Strippers are dirty -yes,  but there is something about them that clearly appeals to people.  A beautiful (sometimes) person wearing next to nothing, gyrating and sliding their body all over the stage.  You have to give them credit though - it's not as easy as it looks.  It takes alot of confidence, coordination and skill to twist your body around that pole and dance naked in front of a crowd of strangers.  I think most people have a stripper fantasy.  I also think most people have probably performed a strip tease.  "Already Over Me" by the Rolling Stones is a perfect strip tease song.  The low purr of the guitar and super chill beat evokes images of night, smoky rooms and sex.

"Already over me" was released on the 1997 "Bridges to Babylon" album by the Rolling Stones. The song didn't even make the charts, but in my opinion it's easily the best song on the album. "Bridges to Babylon" has more of a mellow, bluesy feel to it than previous albums. The "Bridges to Babylon" tour was comprised of 108 shows - making it the second largest grossing tour in North America of all time.

The undeniably sexy Mr. Jagger
The song has a classic theme to it - man loves woman - woman breaks mans' heart.  In a line that screams vanity and insecurity Jagger asks, "Are you already over me?" Ending the relationship is only one part of the break up.  Another step is getting over it, and eventually having to accept that your partner is going to see other people.  This song also describes a vice I am certainly guilty of, falling for someone you know is bad news.  I'm not saying that nice guys always finish last, but I am saying that not-so-nice guys are usually more fun.  When you see something beautiful and wild it's hard to not want to tame it.  I like a challenge, and I believe that nothing worth having ever came easy.

As you poured out the drinks for me
I felt your hooks sink right into me
And I knew you were my destiny
And I thought you'd get the best of me

On the way down to Mexico
As I danced in your rodeo
You say poverty is picturesque
As you dragged your nails across my chest

You're so cold
You're so cruel
I'm your man
Not your fool

Are you already over me
Are you already over me
Are you already over me

What a fool I've been

In the first flush of ecstacy
As you lay naked next to me
While our love put the dawn to flight
I just ignore all those warning lights

Cause when you laugh
I just cry
When you left
I just died

Are you already over me
Are you already over me
Are you already sick me

What a fool I've been

Hard to hold on
To a love divine
I'm kneeling in a corner
Praying to your shrine

 I've been hurt
 So confused
 I've been burned
 I've been bruised

 Are you already over me
 Are you already over me
Are you already sick of me

 Are you already over me
 Are you already over me
Are you already tired of me
 Are you already over me

 What a fool I've been
 What a fool I've been
 What a fool I've been
