On September 7, 2006 at O-Baren in Stockholm, Chris Cornell performed an hour long acoustic concert. This concert may be in fact the most epic unplugged concert ever performed. You have to dig a little deep to find the songs because he never produced an accompanying CD. Your best bet is to search Chris Cornell: Unplugged in Sweden. Cornell performs acoustic versions of a variety of songs from his former bands (Audioslave, Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden), and also covers other hits by Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson , etc. The words to describe this album escape me. It's epic, and you have to listen to it in it's entirety to understand. My intentions were to post the Unplugged in Sweden version of "Like A Stone", but unfortunately I could only find an unplugged version.  |

It was so hard for me to pick just one of Chris Cornell's songs to profile because honestly I'm inspired by so much of his work. The first time I heard "Like a Stone" off of Unplugged in Sweden I remember Cornell's four-octave vocal range bringing tears to my eyes. For real. Cornell doesn't just sing, he wails, he screams and he moans. You can tell he's singing with his heart and his guts.

"Like a Stone" was first released on Audioslave's debut album in 2002. The song gained commercial and critical success, receiving gold certification by the Recording Industry Assoc. of America. Audioslave Bassist, Tim Commerford, reveals that the song is "written about an old man waiting for death, who sits in a house all alone after his friends and family have passed on, waiting to be reunited with them." Cornell explains "the song is about concentrating on the afterlife you would hope for, rather than the normal monotheistic approach: you work really hard all your life to be a good person and a moral persona and fair and generous, and then you go to hell anyway."

"You're So Vain" is a song written and performed by Carly Simon, released in December 1972. The song is a critical profile of a self-absorbed lover; Simon asserts "You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you." The subject's identity has been the matter of speculation, fueled by Simon slowly revealing clues as to his identity.The song was a number-one hit. It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks in early 1973, and also spent two weeks at the top of the Adult Contemporary chart, her first #1 song on either chart. "You're So Vain" was Simon's breakthrough hit in the United Kingdom market, reaching #3 on the UK chart on its original release in 1973. The song was re-released there in the spring of 1991 to cash in on its inclusion in a commercial for Dunlop Tyres, and came very close to making the UK top 40 a second time, peaking at #41.
The song is #72 on Billboard's Greatest Songs of All-Time. "You're So Vain" was voted #216 in RIAA's Songs of the Century.

When Doves Cry
Prince wrote and composed "When Doves Cry" after all the other tracks on Purple Rain were complete. In addition to vocals, he also played all instruments on the track. The song's texture is remarkably stark. There is no bass line, which is very unusual for a dance song; Prince has said that there originally was a bass line, but decided that the song was too conventional with it intact. During live performances of the song on the Purple Rain Tour, Brown Mark, Prince's then-bass player, added bass lines in this song and other songs without a bass line. The song features an intro of a guitar solo and drum machine, followed by a looped guttural vocal. After the lyrics, there is another, much longer guitar and a synthesizer solo. The song ends on a classical music-inspired keyboard piece backed by another synthesizer solo."When Doves Cry" has gone on to become one of Prince's signature songs. Spin magazine ranked the song 6th greatest single of all time. It was number #38 in Movement's list The Greatest Songs of All Time. Rolling Stone ranked "When Doves Cry" #52 on their list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time (which makes it the second highest ranked song of the 1980s, after "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five). In 2006, VH1's "The 100 Greatest Songs of the '80s" ranked the song #5 on the list. At the end of 1989, the song was voted #29 best song of the 1980s by the Israeli radio listeners.
On October 13, 2008, the song was voted #2 on Australian VH1's Top 10 Number One Pop Songs countdown.
